Prince Harry return to Britain came into view again when he said he wants to reconcile with King Charles and William in a GQ interview released on the GQ website. He said the family split is a familiar problem for many people, not just his own family.
Speaking in New York, Harry said, “There’s sibling disagreements, there’s broken relationships between kids and their parents, kids and one parent,” and added, “I want it to work out.” He also said, “With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”
New York interview release
The interview was conducted last month and released later on the GQ website. Harry said he hoped sharing his experience would help others rather than draw sympathy for himself, and he described the issue as “massively relatable” because people often ask him how he expects to work it out.
He said, “Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out,” and added that letting go of the past is something he would encourage everyone to do. Harry also said, “If there’s certain things from the past that’s still affecting your everyday, that’s harder to let go of.”
Archie and Lilibet in UK
Harry said his family returned to the UK for opportunities and for the family, and that putting the children in British schools meant a lot to him. He said Archie and Lilibet had been in school for two weeks and were loving it, and added that it was so important for them to have two completely different cultural experiences.
He said, “Don’t worry, I’m not criticising American schools,” and said he had not realized how important the move was to him. That puts the family move alongside the reconciliation remarks: he is describing both school life for Archie and Lilibet and the same family ties he wants repaired.
Sussexes response
A spokesperson for the Sussexes later said Harry’s comments were not intended as a swipe at Prince William or directed at any of the royal family in any way. The interview was released while the royal family welcomed the Sultan of Oman to Windsor Castle for a state visit, which gave the remarks a wider public audience on the same day.
Whether King Charles and William are ready to match Harry’s stated wish is the unanswered part. For now, the clearest signal is his own: he wants the relationship repaired, and he wants the conversation to stop there being more family conflict on top of everything else he says people are already carrying.
