Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Roster Moves Signal Another Backfield Reset

The Philadelphia Eagles’ running back room is getting a fresh reset, and not because things are stable. On Tuesday evening, the team officially announced five transactions, including four running back moves, as it continued to patch together depth for Week 7 and Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

The biggest takeaway is simple: the Eagles are still searching for usable bodies at a position that has been battered by injuries. Saquon Barkley’s Week 7 return is unclear, Dameon Pierce is the only healthy running back on the roster, and Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley are both on injured reserve. That is a thin margin for a team trying to get through the middle of the schedule without losing ground.

What the Eagles did on Tuesday

Philadelphia’s moves were part of a broader roster shuffle that had already been building for days. Earlier this month, the Eagles signed Brockermeyer to their practice squad around the time they traded Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens. Last week, they signed Wheeler to their practice squad. On the last day of August, they signed Blue to their practice squad, then moved Blue to the active roster this past Friday.

The most notable addition for the running back picture is Mitchell, who returned to Philly to add depth after previously being with the team in training camp. Mitchell had been with the Eagles before an injury led to an injured reserve stint and an injury settlement, and now he is back in the mix as temporary insurance if Barkley is unavailable.

Why the depth matters now

The Eagles have already seen how fragile this situation can be. In Week 6, Steele entered as RB2 behind Dameon Pierce and suffered a shoulder injury on his first and only touch. He finished with four yards on one touch, a small sample that still underscored how quickly the room can change from one snap to the next.

That is why the Mitchell move makes sense even if it does not solve everything. Philadelphia is not just filling a slot; it is trying to preserve enough backfield flexibility to get through Monday night. Steele’s injury, Barkley’s uncertain status and the absence of Bigsby and Shipley leave the Eagles with very little room for error.

Mitchell does not have to become a headline player for this to matter. He simply has to help the Eagles get through a week when the depth chart is doing a lot of heavy lifting. That is often how these midseason roster moves work: they are not glamorous, but they can decide whether a team enters Monday night with a functional plan or another emergency.

The Eagles’ latest set of transactions does not guarantee stability, but it does show how aggressively they are trying to manufacture it. At this point, that may be the most important roster move of all.
