San Diego news from northbound Interstate 5: a crash involving a big rig and a car near the Washington Street off-ramp in Mission Hills sent four people to a hospital on Tuesday morning. The California Highway Patrol said the collision was reported at about 9:44 a.m., and the wreck later kept lanes closed during cleanup.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said four people in the car were taken to a hospital for treatment of various injuries. Two people from the truck were evaluated at the scene and did not need hospital care, and no other injuries were reported.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash drove the big rig over the center divider. That left both directions of Interstate 5 closed in the Mission Hills area for part of Tuesday morning, turning a single collision into a wider freeway shutdown on one of the city’s main corridors.
Cleanup on Interstate 5
By about 4:30 p.m., authorities had reopened all southbound lanes. The No. 1, 2, and 3 lanes on northbound Interstate 5 near Washington Street were still closed at that time while cleanup continued.
The collision caused a major freeway closure, but the cause had not been determined as crews worked through the aftermath. For drivers headed through Mission Hills, the immediate problem was not only the crash itself but the lane closures that remained in place hours later on northbound Interstate 5.
