A man and a dog died after a Beaufort Drive Wirral house fire on Monday evening, after emergency crews were called just after 20:30 BST to a semi-detached home in Wallasey. The man was rescued from the building, but paramedics pronounced him dead before he reached Arrowe Park Hospital.
Three engines attended, and the ground floor was well alight when crews arrived, with smoke issuing from the upper floor. Fire crews gave the man emergency first aid at the scene and tried to resuscitate the dog, which died there.
Ged Knock on Beaufort Drive
Ged Knock said the crews worked hard in extremely difficult circumstances. He added: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the occupier at this difficult time.”
He also said: “We are conscious of the impact on the community and will conduct a full reassurance programme for the area.” That means attention now shifts from the fire ground to the surrounding homes, where Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said the local response will continue alongside the investigation.
Merseyside Police investigation
A joint Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire. Ged Knock said: “A joint Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service investigation is underway to establish the cause of the fire.”
The sequence matters for anyone affected by the blaze: the man did not survive despite being pulled from the house, and the dog died at the scene before the investigation began. The next step is to determine what started the fire and how it spread through the property on Beaufort Drive in Wallasey.
