F1 Grand Prix Distance Changes 2028: 305km race length returns after one-season cut

The short answer is no: Formula 1’s shorter grand prix distances are not permanent. After a one-season reduction in 2027, the sport is set to restore full race distances in 2028, and that matters because this is not some cosmetic tweak. It is a clear reversal of the idea that grand prix length should be trimmed back for the sake of convenience.

Last month, Formula 1 announced it would cut 15 kilometres from the standard grand prix distance next year. That means 2027 will be run at 290 kilometres for all grands prix except Monaco, which already runs to a shorter race distance than other grands prix. Then in 2028, the previous distance of more than 305 kilometres will be back. In other words, the reduction is being treated as temporary, not as the new normal.

What changes in 2027 and 2028?

The rule at the heart of this is simple enough. The Sporting Regulations state that the distance of the race, from the start signal to the end-of-session signal, shall be equal to the least number of complete laps which exceed a distance of 305km. That standard is what Formula 1 is moving away from in 2027 before returning to it in 2028.

The stated reason for the shorter 2027 distance is to reduce the number of components teams need to redesign next year, with the change linked to new fuel flow limits coming into force. That is a practical explanation, and Formula 1 has every right to argue that technical change sometimes demands practical solutions. But it also tells you exactly what this is: a workaround, not a philosophical shift in what a grand prix should be.

That is why the 2028 reset is the real story. If the reduced distance were meant to stick, Formula 1 would have made that clear. Instead, the message now is that the 290km format is an interim measure. The established grand prix distance will return, Monaco aside, and the sport’s normal rhythm will be restored.

Keith Collantine of RaceFans reported the confirmation that Formula 1 will reinstate full grand prix distances in 2028. And that leaves the bigger point untouched: once the technical pressure eases, Formula 1 is not prepared to permanently shrink the length of its standard races. For supporters who feared a permanent dilution of the format, that is a useful reality check.

The debate may not be over, of course. Any move away from the traditional 305km benchmark invites questions about identity, sporting integrity and how much tinkering the championship can absorb before it starts to lose its shape. But on the central question, the answer is now clear enough: 2027 will be shorter, 2028 will go back to full distance, and the one-season experiment will remain exactly that.
