Former Georgia captain Giorgi Nemsadze has died at the age of 54, ending the story of a player whose career stretched across Georgia, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland and Italy.
Nemsadze was a familiar figure in Georgian football for many years, first as a midfielder and later as an administrator. He made 69 appearances for Georgia between 1992 and 2004, serving as captain during his international career.
A career built in Georgia and abroad
At club level, Nemsadze represented Dinamo Tbilisi from 1988 to 1991 before later returning to the club from 1993 to 1995 after spells at Guria Lanchkhuti and Shevardeni Tbilisi.
His playing career also took him beyond Georgia, with spells in Germany, Turkey, Switzerland and Italy. That breadth of experience made him one of the more recognisable Georgian footballers of his era.
Return to Dinamo Tbilisi in a leadership role
After his playing days, Nemsadze moved into administration and was appointed sporting director of Dinamo Tbilisi in March 2011. He remained in that role for a year and a half before leaving the club and moving into coaching.
For Georgian football, his death at 54 marks the loss of a former international who contributed at both playing and organisational level. His name will remain closely linked with Dinamo Tbilisi and with the national team he once led as captain.
