Jaime Jaquez Jr. now has a clear deadline in front of him. After being traded from the Heat to the Milwaukee Bucks in early July, the wing is eligible for a rookie scale extension until October 19, giving the Bucks a short window to decide whether they want to lock him in now.
That timing matters because Jaquez arrives in Milwaukee on the back of his best NBA season to date. In 2025/26, he averaged career highs of 15.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists across 75 contests, a strong step forward for a player who has steadily improved since entering the league.
From UCLA standout to NBA rotation piece
Jaquez’s path to this point has been built on production and consistency. At UCLA in 2022/23, he averaged 17.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals in 37 games, showing the kind of all-round game that made him attractive in the 2023 draft.
The Heat selected him with the 18th overall pick, and he made an immediate impact in Miami. As a rookie in 2023/24, he posted 11.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steal in 75 games, before following that with 8.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.9 steals in 66 appearances in 2024/25.
That statistical base explains why he is now part of the discussion around rookie scale extensions. For the Bucks, the question is not whether Jaquez can contribute. It is whether October 19 is the right moment to commit to him long term.
Why the Bucks have a decision to make
The trade in early July brought Jaquez to Milwaukee as part of the deal that also saw Giannis Antetokounmpo move. That alone gives the Bucks a different perspective on their roster, because any team making a major move like that has to think carefully about how it supports the next stage of the build.
Jaquez has already shown he can handle meaningful minutes. He logged 33.2 minutes per game in his college season at UCLA, then settled into NBA roles of 28.2 MPG as a rookie and 20.7 MPG in 2024/25 before expanding his game again in 2025/26.
There is also the simple fact that his trajectory has moved in the right direction. A player who once finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting and also received All-Rookie recognition has now added a career-best scoring and playmaking season to his resume. For a Bucks team looking to shape its future, that is exactly the kind of profile that can make an extension conversation worth having.
With the deadline now set for October 19, Milwaukee does not have endless time to weigh the deal. Jaquez has already done enough on the floor to make himself part of the conversation, and the next move will show how strongly the Bucks believe in what comes next.
