Morez Johnson Jr. did not need a huge scoring night to make noise. In a preseason game against the Hawks, the Dallas Mavericks rookie put up 7 rebounds in 14 minutes, and that is the kind of stat line that gets a coach’s attention fast.
This is where early preseason really matters. Johnson is not being asked to walk in and look like a finished product. He is being asked to do the hard, inconvenient stuff that often decides whether a rookie gets trusted or forgotten. Rebounding, defense and dirty work can sound like the least glamorous parts of the game, but they are exactly the parts that can buy him minutes.
Why this matters for Dallas
The backdrop is impossible to ignore. Over the last couple of years, Dallas has dealt with a lot of frontcourt injuries, which makes every useful big man a little more valuable than he might be on a healthier roster. That does not mean Johnson is being handed anything. It does mean there is a path here if he keeps producing in the areas that matter most.
The key is that Johnson’s value may come more from defense and rebounding than scoring. That is not a small thing. Teams always say they want versatility, but what they really mean is they want players who can survive different matchups and still help the possession. Johnson’s ability to contribute from one through five gives him a real chance to stay in the conversation.
So the early verdict is simple: he has already shown he can be useful, and in a rotation battle that is often half the fight. From here, his minutes will come down to whether he keeps rebounding, keeps defending and keeps doing the dirty work that coaches trust when the game gets serious.
