Matt Purslow says when does MW4 multiplayer come out is not answered in his IGN opinion piece. The piece focuses on Modern Warfare 4’s campaign instead, and sets the game in 2026.
He also writes that Modern Warfare 4 is one of the series’ best campaigns. For readers looking for multiplayer timing, that leaves no launch date or window to work from.
Matt Purslow on Modern Warfare 4
Purslow’s line is direct: “You see, Modern Warfare 4 is Modern Warfare 2.” He uses that comparison to frame the game as a return to the older structure that made the series’ shift to contemporary battlefields so recognizable.
Infinity Ward moved Call of Duty away from its 1940s origins with the first Modern Warfare, and Modern Warfare 2 then placed its story during a Russian invasion of America. In this new setup, Modern Warfare 4 swaps the streets of the United States for the roads of South Korea.
Captain Price in South Korea
Captain Price headlines the story, while Mads Mikkelsen plays The Archer and Young Mazino plays Park Hyun-Jun. Purslow describes Park Hyun-Jun as a junior soldier conscripted under the South Korean Military Service Act.
That detail gives the campaign a different pressure point from the older game. The North Koreans are the aggressors, and the story has only been able to explore the emotional toll on Park in small moments.
Modern Warfare 2 formula
The piece’s central tension is that it praises Modern Warfare 4 as one of the series’ best campaigns while also saying it closely replicates Modern Warfare 2. Purslow puts that plainly in another line: “The campaign doesn’t have space to fully explore the emotional toll this has on the inexperienced Park, but there are small moments that let thi”.
That leaves the practical question untouched for players who want the multiplayer mode. The campaign coverage gives the setting, the cast, and the tonal comparison, but not the date they need.
For now, the only hard timing in the piece is 2026 for the game’s setting. Anyone waiting on multiplayer still has no release date to plan around.
