MG plans to begin assembling the MG GO electric hatchback at SAIC's new Ferrol plant in northwestern Spain from late 2028. Sales of the production version are expected around September 2027, creating a gap between the car's market debut and the start of local assembly.
The car was previously referred to as the MG 2, and the Go name may be retained for the production model. It is expected to be about 4 metres long, use the E+ platform and carry a 149 hp electric motor with a 43 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.
SAIC's Ferrol plant
SAIC announced its intention to build its first European plant in June. Construction of the Ferrol facility is planned to begin in 2027, and the plant is set to open by the end of 2028.
At the first stage, the site is expected to produce 70,000 vehicles a year, with a stated maximum capacity of 120,000 cars. The facility is to cover 100,000 square metres and provide for 2,000 jobs, including 1,000 jobs directly at the plant.
Ferrol and Europe
The first cars are planned to be assembled from completely knocked-down kits delivered from China. At the initial stage, the site will have no operations for parts stamping, body production or painting.
That setup makes the timing unusual: sales of the production version are expected around September 2027, but assembly in Spain is planned to start only from late 2028. Ferrol is already the European receiving point for MG models arriving from China by sea, and the project would turn that logistics role into a local production base for Europe.
Spain's EV factories
Chinese carmakers are choosing Spain to produce models for the European market to avoid EU tariffs on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles. Geely has chosen Ford's plant in Valencia, Leapmotor uses Stellantis facilities in Madrid and Zaragoza, and Chery operates at the former Nissan site in Barcelona.
For MG and SAIC, the practical question is not just the name on the badge. The production version could still reach buyers before Ferrol starts assembly, while the plant itself is built up in stages and only later moves beyond imported kits.
