Square Enix has turned Final Fantasy Resonance into an HD-2D RPG for Nintendo Switch 2. The game draws from the first season of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile title that ran four chapters from 2016 to 2025. That shift matters because the material is no longer confined to a discontinued mobile game.
Final Fantasy Resonance and Brave Exvius
The change is structural, not cosmetic. Resonance uses highly detailed character sprites and occasional pixel-based cinema scenes, so the old material is being recast with a presentation that is meant to read like a full RPG rather than a mobile archive.
Square Enix has been rescuing discontinued mobile games and rehydrating them into full-fat RPG experiences, and Resonance sits inside that pattern. A similar move appears in Malo932's Nintendo Switch 2 Smash 6 report, which shows how closely the platform is now tied to new and revived game projects.
Rain and Cecil Harvey
Rain is the main character, and his Visions system does most of the mechanical work. He can equip Cecil Harvey as a Vision and gain access to light and dark magic, which means the game is not just retelling old story material but also rebuilding how a party grows in play.
That system borrows from several Final Fantasy ideas at once. Visions teach transferable skills like Final Fantasy V's job system, and they can also give permanent stat boosts as they level up like Final Fantasy VI's espers. Cecil Harvey gets stronger as he fights with Rain and bestows skills that can be equipped as wanted.
Turn-based battle in HD-2D
Resonance also keeps a classic turn-based battle system that shows who is next in line to attack like Final Fantasy X. Lasswell is a samurai who favors ice, Jake is a gunner attuned to the wind, and Lid appears as a party member in the battle system discussion.
The game feels like a callback-filled Final Fantasy game, but its distinctions are its greatest strength. That balance is what separates it from a simple nostalgia project, especially when Square Enix is using HD-2D to give older material a different commercial life. The unresolved question is when Final Fantasy Resonance was released or made available to players.
