Leverkusen arrive unbeaten with six unanswered UEL goals — Ofi Vs Leverkusen is a brutal test for Crete's European dream

This is the sort of night that tells you very quickly whether a fairytale has proper legs or not. OFI Crete have already shown they are not in the UEFA Europa League main draw merely to admire the stage, but matchday three brings the kind of opponent that punishes every hesitation. Bayer Leverkusen arrive unbeaten, carrying six unanswered goals in the competition and the kind of authority that makes even a strong home record feel fragile.

That does not mean OFI Crete should be dismissed. Far from it. They have already beaten Hoffenheim 2-0, and even in defeat against Rennes they showed enough to suggest they can make life awkward for more established sides. But there is a reason Leverkusen are viewed as one of the competition favourites. They are the losing 2024 finalists, they are unbeaten, and they have been doing the basic things better than most: controlling games, creating chances, and not giving opponents much room to breathe.

The last meeting says plenty

History is not destiny, but it does matter. When these two sides last met in Europe, Bayer Leverkusen beat OFI Crete 1-0 in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1995. That was a different era, of course, but the message is oddly familiar: Leverkusen have rarely been a side that allows the game to drift. They make you work, and they often make you regret every wasteful spell.

OFI Crete, to their credit, have earned the right to ask questions. They are making their first-ever appearance in the main draw of one of Europe's top-two competitions, and their home record in major European competition has been a genuine reason for optimism. Nine wins from 11 home games, with one draw and one loss, is not the sort of statistic you wave away. It says they can compete. It says the atmosphere can matter. It says this venue is not a free hit for anyone.

Leverkusen's edge is in the details

Still, the numbers surrounding Leverkusen are the kind that usually belong to teams in command. They are on a seven-game unbeaten streak, have gone unbeaten in seven straight away games, and have lost only one of their last 16 UEFA Europa League matches. That is not just good form. That is sustained European reliability. Their previous outing underlined the point, too: Patrik Schick scored two first-half penalties, and even if he has now gone four games without a goal, he still has ten goals in 24 appearances and remains the clearest finishing threat in the squad.

OFI Crete's own attacking story has been more modest but still important. They have three goals across their last five UEFA Europa League games, and that is enough to keep them in the conversation, not enough to make them favourites. The Rennes result also showed the danger of switching off after a strong start. Leading at halftime is one thing. Finishing the job is another. At this level, that difference is usually fatal.

There will be a temptation to romanticise OFI Crete's position as the plucky newcomer with a fortress at home and nothing to lose. But Leverkusen do not turn up to play a role in anyone else's story. They turn up to impose their own. If OFI Crete want to make this one memorable, they will need more than resistance. They will need a near-perfect evening.
