Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Launches Without Open Matchmaking, Sam Watanuki Reports — Cod Mw4 Multiplayer Release Date

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer opened without Open matchmaking playlists, and the COD MW4 multiplayer release date has already changed the first hours of play. Sam Watanuki reported that the option is unavailable at launch, leaving players with fewer ways to choose how matches are built.

Some players are reporting long waits to find matches, while others say their lobbies feel overly competitive. The missing playlist is drawing attention because the official Call of Duty account said Open playlists would be available in the MW4 beta.

Sam Watanuki on launch

Watanuki wrote that Open matchmaking playlists are currently unavailable in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer. That leaves launch-day players using the available matchmaking structure without the open option that had been described earlier in the rollout.

Infinity Ward and Activision have not issued a statement addressing the missing Open playlists at launch. For now, the practical effect is simple: players who expected an Open option at launch do not have it.

Call of Duty July statement

In July, the official Call of Duty account said, "Open playlists will continue to be available in BO7 and the MW4 Beta." On July 23, the same account said, "The new system builds on what we’ve learned, with smarter team balancing, wide match variety, improvements that help keep matches full, and a better experience for mixed-level parties. We believe these changes will deliver a better overall experience for all players, with the variety players love from classic Call of Duty."

That statement framed the new system as one meant to shape matchmaking quality, team balance, and lobby fill rates. It also set expectations that Open playlists would still exist in the beta environment, which is why their absence at launch is drawing notice.

Modern Warfare 4 launch

At the time of writing, it is unclear whether Open matchmaking playlists will be added to Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer in a future update. Players watching the launch can only use the playlists that are available now, while the question of whether the Open option returns later remains unanswered by Infinity Ward and Activision.
