Adem Bona Questionable for Tuesday’s Opener as 76ers Face Center Depth Test

The first real test of the Philadelphia 76ers’ season may not be about offense or pace. It may be about whether they can get through Tuesday night with enough healthy size to survive the middle of the floor. Adem Bona was listed as questionable for the opener against the New York Knicks, and in a rotation already thinned by injury, that is not a small detail.

Bona’s status matters because Philadelphia’s center depth was already weakened before the season began. Ariel Hukporti is out for the year after suffering a torn Achilles in the first half of his first preseason game, which left the 76ers even more reliant on Bona as the likely backup behind Joel Embiid if he is healthy enough to play. Without him, the team would be forced to keep adjusting from a position group that was already short on answers.

Why Bona’s availability matters

The foot injury is the reason Bona is on the injury report, and it also explains why the 23-year-old missed the entire preseason and most of training camp. That absence matters because Philadelphia was hoping to use this season to build on a more competitive 2025-2026 campaign, when Bona appeared in 58 games and played 15.6 minutes per game, averaging 5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. He also had 10 games and three starts during the playoff run, which gave the 76ers a clearer look at what he can offer when healthy.

The concern is not just about raw production. It is about availability and structure. If Bona cannot suit up, Philadelphia loses the player expected to serve as Embiid’s backup, and that changes how the 76ers can manage the center position against New York. In a road opener, that kind of uncertainty can shape rotations quickly.

A rotation already under pressure

Hukporti’s injury leaves the 76ers without one of the players they were counting on to help stabilize the depth chart. Bona’s preseason absence then removed the other obvious option for early-season minutes. That is why Tuesday night feels important even before the ball is tipped: the matchup is not only against the Knicks, but also against the reality of what Philadelphia has left at center.

There is still a path for the 76ers to open the season with more flexibility if Bona is cleared. But if he is not available, the burden around Embiid becomes much heavier immediately. For a team trying to start the 2026-2027 NBA season on the road, that is the sort of problem that can echo beyond one night.
