Forest Green Rovers have signed Will Grigg on a free transfer from Chesterfield, with the experienced striker agreeing a contract until June 2028.
The move gives Forest Green Rovers a forward with more than 500 EFL appearances and 192 career goals, adding proven experience to the squad for the rest of the campaign and beyond. Grigg is 35 years old and arrives with a long record in the English game.
What Will Grigg brings
Grigg made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in 2012 and has earned 12 caps, scoring three goals at international level. His club career includes spells with Walsall, Brentford, MK Dons, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Rotherham United and Chesterfield, along with a standout FA Cup moment in 2018 when he scored the only goal as Wigan Athletic knocked Manchester City out of the competition.
More recently, Grigg was part of Chesterfield's National League-winning side in 2024. He also spent the period beginning in 2023 making over 100 appearances and scoring 43 goals for Chesterfield, underlining the consistency Forest Green Rovers are bringing in with the deal.
Why the move matters
For Forest Green Rovers, the signing is straightforward in one sense: they have added a striker who knows how to score and has done it across several levels of the game. Grigg's experience should also help settle an attack that now has a veteran finisher available through June 2028.
It is also a sign of intent. Free transfers can still carry real value when they bring a player with Grigg's background, and Forest Green Rovers have secured one of the more recognisable names available in the National League and the wider EFL conversation.
