The good news for Leicester City is simple enough: the squad is not getting any thinner for this afternoon’s trip to Luton Town. In a season where availability has already become a running issue, that matters. Wes Burns is back in the squad, Christian McFarlane is available, and for once the discussion is about who can play rather than who has been lost next.
That does not mean Leicester’s injury picture has suddenly become neat and tidy. Far from it. This is still a side carrying the sort of absences that force managers to think twice about every selection, every substitution and every late-game tweak. But on the eve of a League One match at Kenilworth Road, the latest update at least gives Russell Martin a bit more room to work with.
Burns returns, McFarlane is ready
The headline is Burns. His return to the squad is the cleanest short-term boost Leicester could have wanted before heading to Luton Town. He is back in contention, and in a squad stretched by injuries, even one returning body can make a real difference to how a match is managed. McFarlane being available adds to that, after he was managed following a leg issue after the Jersey Mike's Trophy game with Stevenage.
There is a practical edge to this as well. Leicester have spent enough time dealing with uncertainty that simply being able to name more options feels like a small victory. It does not solve every problem, but it does change the mood around the afternoon. In these situations, stability is not glamorous, but it is valuable.
The absences still bite
Of course, the more sobering part of the update is that Leicester’s longer-term injury list has not vanished just because one or two players are back. Jayden Joseph is still expected to be out for a few weeks after last featuring more than a month ago in the 4-3 win over Stockport County. That is the sort of absence that quietly shifts the balance of a squad, especially when it stretches beyond a quick turnaround.
Then there is the reality of the players who are nowhere near a quick return. Ben Nelson ruptured his ACL in pre-season against Genoa and underwent surgery, while Jakub Stolarczyk suffered an ACL injury in Leicester City’s 2-0 victory over Plymouth and will miss the rest of the season. Those are not bumps in the road. Those are season-shaping losses.
So yes, Leicester can at least travel to Kenilworth Road with a slightly healthier feel about the matchday group. But let’s not dress it up as anything grander than that. Burns back in the squad and McFarlane available is welcome. It is not a full reset, and nobody inside the club should pretend otherwise. Still, in a sport where bad news tends to arrive in clusters, even a modest lift is worth taking.
