New Yorkers who want a close-up view of the TCS New York City Marathon finish line will have a chance to get in for free. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced that the city will give away 350 tickets to the TCS New York City Marathon Grandstand for the race on Sunday, November 1.

The drawing for the free tickets closes on October 26 at 11:59 p.m. The grandstand seats are typically ticketed, with prices starting at $55, and they offer a view of the homestretch as runners cross the finish line in Central Park.

What the giveaway means

The timing lines up with one of the biggest days on the New York City sports calendar. Nearly 60,000 runners will take on the marathon’s 26.2-mile course, which winds through all five boroughs and finishes in Central Park. For spectators, the grandstand is one of the most direct ways to watch the final stretch.

In announcing the giveaway, Mamdani said that every runner deserves a crowd ready to cheer them home and that New Yorkers should have a chance to experience the special joy of the race. He also said sports belong to the people, a theme that fits a public lottery for seats at a major city event.

A race with history

The TCS New York City Marathon was first run in 1970, and the 2026 edition will mark the 50th anniversary of the race’s five-borough course. New York Road Runners, which produces 60 annual adult and youth races including the marathon, said the event brings together runners and spectators from around the world in a display of community and human spirit.

NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer said the organization is thrilled to partner with Mayor Mamdani and the City of New York to give more New Yorkers the opportunity to experience Marathon Sunday from the finish line. He added that there is nothing quite like watching runners cross that line, especially in a race that has become one of the world’s largest.

For New Yorkers hoping to attend, the setup is simple: enter before the October 26 deadline and wait for the drawing. If selected, they will get a seat for one of the most recognizable finishes in road racing.
