Cal got a timely lift on Friday when Ian Strong was upgraded to probable for Saturday’s game against SMU, giving the Bears a better chance of fielding one of their more important wide receiver options against the 23rd-ranked Mustangs. But the injury report also brought fresh concern elsewhere, with three other receivers and two starting offensive linemen moved to doubtful.
The Bears enter the game at 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while SMU arrives at 5-1. That makes the final availability report especially important for Cal, because the margin for error is already thin against a ranked opponent.
Strong's return changes the outlook
Strong had been listed as questionable on both Wednesday and Thursday, and he missed last week’s game with an injury. His move to probable is the clearest positive from Cal’s Friday update, especially with the Bears needing reliable targets in a difficult matchup.
Chase Hendricks had been healthy all week and there was no doubt he would play, so the wider focus now falls on who else can be trusted in the passing game. Strong’s availability at least gives Cal a better chance of keeping some continuity at receiver.
Receivers and line depth remain the concern
The more worrying news for Cal came with Cooper Perry, Jordan King and Mark Hamper all downgraded to doubtful on Friday. If they do not play, the Bears could lean more heavily on Kyion Grayes and Tyree Sams for additional snaps.
That is where the injury report starts to matter beyond simple availability. Cal does not just lose bodies if those receivers sit out; it also loses experience and flexibility in how it can attack SMU.
There was also bad news up front, with Bastian Swinney and Jimothy Lewis Jr. both downgraded to doubtful. For a team already facing a ranked opponent, that can affect both protection and rhythm, especially if Cal is forced to adjust its combinations on short notice.
Friday’s report leaves Cal with one encouraging development and several setbacks. Strong looks likelier to play than he did earlier in the week, but the Bears still head into Saturday with questions at wide receiver and on the offensive line against a team that has given itself a strong start to the season.
