Liverpool Vs Brighton: Saturday's River of Light event cancelled as Storm Boelo hits Merseyside

Liverpool City Council has cancelled Saturday's River of Light event because of Storm Boelo, with severe weather also forcing the opening two nights of the free festival to be called off.

The display features 13 illuminated artworks across Liverpool's waterfront and city centre and had been scheduled to run each evening until 1 November. Saturday's cancellation means visitors missed another planned night of the waterfront and city centre trail as the weather system continued to disrupt events across Merseyside.

Weather disruption across Merseyside

The yellow weather warning across Merseyside remained in place until 23:00 BST on Sunday 25 October, keeping the region on alert for difficult conditions. The same system also affected other local attractions and events, with Lark Lane Farmers and Craft Market cancelled on Saturday.

On Sunday 25 October, Knowsley Safari Park said the site would be closed because of high winds, while Liverpool Cathedral remained closed to general visitors. The cathedral expected to reopen for general visiting on Monday 26 October.

For River of Light, the immediate question is when conditions will allow the festival to continue safely. For now, the weather has already taken a significant chunk out of the event's opening schedule.
