Quinn Hughes said his future with the Minnesota Wild remains firmly on the table, and his latest comments suggest a decision may not be far off.
On Saturday, Hughes said that “my two feet are planted in Minnesota” and that “something could happen soon” as contract talks continue between Pat Brisson and Bill Guerin. Hughes is in the final year of his current deal, so any movement now would carry immediate significance for both the player and the Wild.
The timing matters because this is not a situation that has been building in the dark. Before the season, Hughes said he did not feel stressed about getting something done before the year began. He also made it clear that he does not spend much time mapping out his future far in advance.
“With planning out my future, I don’t do that,” Hughes said. “I don’t really plan out my summer.” He added that he simply “went about it and enjoyed it,” and that he did not feel pressure to rush a deal ahead of the season. At the same time, he left the door open for an agreement by adding, “And that’s not saying that something won’t happen, but that’s just how it is.”
Hughes sounds comfortable in Minnesota
What stood out most in Hughes’ comments was how strongly he spoke about his fit with the Wild. “I’m really enjoying playing here,” he said. “We have a great team.” He also pointed to the opportunity in front of the club, saying, “First thing is, you want to get into the playoffs, but I would think that we have a chance to win this year.”
That is an important detail for Minnesota. When a player in a contract year says he feels settled and believes in the roster, it gives the team a stronger position heading into negotiations. Hughes also said, “I’m really happy here. I love the guys. I love the team, and I fit in really well,” which lines up with the idea that both sides have reason to keep talking.
The discussion has also included outside speculation about whether Hughes would want to play with Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes on the New Jersey Devils at some point. Quinn Hughes did not dismiss that idea entirely, but he downplayed the notion that it would override everything else. “Obviously, there’s a draw to play with those guys at some point,” he said, “but I think Jack said it perfectly: I’m not going to sacrifice a great spot for me to play with them.”
That makes the next stretch especially interesting. Hughes has not committed to anything publicly, but his comments suggest he is open, engaged and comfortable where he is. With talks already underway, the Minnesota Wild appear to have a real chance to keep one of their top defencemen, and Hughes' latest remarks indicate a resolution could come soon.
