Chicago Fire FC clinch playoff berth before Chicago Vs Atlanta United matchup

Chicago Fire FC head to Atlanta United FC on Saturday, October 24, 2026, already locked into the postseason but still with something real to play for. The Fire have clinched a playoff berth, yet the race for the top four remains important because those spots come with a home playoff game.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM CT, 7:30 PM ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Chicago will try to halt a two-game losing streak. The Fire had been on a three-match winning streak before back-to-back defeats, including a 1-0 loss to New England last Saturday. That result did not stop Chicago from securing its place in the postseason, as Orlando City’s 4-1 win over D.C. United also helped settle the picture.

Chicago still has seeding to chase

Even with a playoff berth secured, Chicago cannot treat this as a dead-rubber match. The top four earn a home playoff game, so the Fire’s position in the table still matters. Chicago entered the Atlanta game with 30 goals scored and 43 goals against, which shows why the final stretch remains about more than simply qualifying.

The Fire already handled Atlanta once this year, beating the club 1-0 at Soldier Field on April 11, 2026, when Maren Haile-Selassie scored early. That result will not guarantee anything this time, but it does give Chicago a clean reference point heading into another meeting with a team that has struggled for much of the season.

Atlanta is still searching for consistency

Atlanta United FC lost 3-1 to Inter Miami last Saturday and has spent much of the year trying to find stable form. The club changed coaches in November 2025, when Gerardo “Tata” Martino was hired after Ronny Deila was fired. Even with that reset, Atlanta has continued to deal with inconsistency.

The numbers reflect that. As of September 20, 2026, Atlanta had scored 30 goals and allowed 43, which is not the profile of a team that has been controlling matches regularly. Chicago’s visit gives Atlanta another chance to steady itself, but it also arrives against a Fire team that, despite its recent slump, has already done enough to reach the postseason.

Berhalter and Salétros liked the performance, not the finish

Gregg Berhalter said the performance was outstanding tonight, while also pointing to a defensive lapse against the low block. Anton Salétros gave a similar read, saying the team dominated play but failed to score. Those two views line up with Chicago’s recent trend: the Fire are creating enough to stay in control of games, but the results have not always followed.

That is what makes this trip to Atlanta interesting. Chicago is in the postseason, but it still needs points, momentum and sharper finishing if it wants a better path once the playoffs begin.
