Travis Knight’s Wildwood Box Office Budget May Reach $700M

Wildwood box office reports say Travis Knight’s stop-motion film may carry a budget of at least $400 million and possibly as much as $700 million, far above the earlier $100 million figure. If that range is right, the film sits in a financial tier that would dwarf most animated projects and put Laika on the hook for an unusually large amount of cost.

The $700 million figure would make Wildwood the most expensive animated movie ever made, while the older $100 million estimate came from a throwaway line in a Variety box-office piece. TheInSneider said that figure was flat-out wrong, and one source put the potential overrun at four times the original estimate.

Caleb Deschanel’s three years

Three full years on set for Caleb Deschanel add another layer to the cost picture. Wildwood has reportedly been in physical production for six years, and that kind of stop-motion schedule can turn labor, sets, and camera work into a much larger bill than a standard animated production.

Six years of physical production also helps explain why the budget discussion is moving now instead of at the start of the project. Travis Knight has overseen the film as director and Laika CEO, and the scale of the spending claim now sits beside the studio’s reputation built on Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings.

Laika’s $9M opening weekend

$9 million is the opening weekend figure tied to Wildwood, and that number is what gives the budget debate its sharpest edge. A prestige, Oscar-frontrunning animated project that arrives with that launch profile would need a very long box office run to cover costs that large.

$36 billion is the value tied to Phil Knight, Travis Knight’s father, but the film’s reported finances stand on their own. Wildwood is a Laika release, and the central question now is not the film’s scale but how the reported budget climbed from $100 million to a range as high as $700 million.

$200 million was the reported cost of Elden Ring, and that makes the Wildwood range stand out even more by comparison. If the higher estimate holds, the losses would likely be unmatched by any film in history, leaving Laika with a level of exposure that is hard to miss even before opening weekend.
