Aintree’s Sunday Halloween Family Fun Day meeting was abandoned before racing could begin after overnight winds linked to Storm Boelo made the track unsafe. The card included the William Hill Old Roan Chase, but the course said the weather left no realistic way to stage the fixture as planned.
In its Sunday morning statement, Aintree said overnight wind speeds had reached 44mph and that further significant winds were expected until at least early afternoon. That was enough to force the abandonment of the entire meeting, turning what had been set up as a family-focused afternoon into a no-race day at the course.
The practical impact was immediate for racegoers. Aintree said general admission ticket holders would be refunded, while hospitality bookers would be contacted in the coming days. For those planning to attend the Halloween Family Fun Day, the cancellation left a familiar autumn racing problem: the sport can prepare for a card, but it cannot bargain with the weather.
Other Sunday meetings still went ahead
The Aintree update also made clear that the situation was local rather than nationwide. Market Rasen’s meeting went ahead as planned after an early inspection, while the Irish cards at Galway and Wexford were also on. In a weekend where conditions varied sharply across Britain and Ireland, Aintree simply ended up on the wrong side of the wind.
That is the blunt reality of outdoor racing in late autumn. The William Hill Old Roan Chase was the headline race on the Aintree card, but the meeting never got the chance to become a sporting event at all. Instead, Sunday became a reminder that safety, not schedule, decides the final call when the weather turns severe.
