Owen Bailey scored both of Doncaster Rovers' goals as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0, a result that will add real pressure on Henrik Pedersen after another frustrating night for the Owls.
Bailey, who joined Doncaster from Gateshead in 2023, made the breakthrough six minutes into the match when he hooked in from a corner. He then struck again in the 16th minute, finishing from a low Isaac Hutchinson delivery from the byline to give Doncaster a decisive first-half lead.
Bailey made the difference early
That quick double changed the shape of the game immediately. Doncaster were able to play with control after taking the lead, while Wednesday were left chasing the contest before it had really settled.
For Bailey, it was a reminder of how important timing and sharpness can be in tight matches. His first goal came from a set-piece and his second arrived from open play, underlining the variety of Doncaster's threat in the opening stages.
Wednesday could not find a response
Sheffield Wednesday improved after the break, but they could not find a way through. Doncaster goalkeeper Tommy Simkin kept them out in the second half, and Wednesday's large travelling support were left booing the team off at full-time.
The scoreline will not only be remembered for Bailey's brace, but also for the pressure it leaves on Henrik Pedersen. A 2-0 defeat away from home is hard enough to take; the manner of it, with both goals conceded before the game had reached the 16-minute mark, makes it even more concerning.
Doncaster did their job early and then saw the match out. For Wednesday, the next test now carries extra weight.
