Nohl Williams is leaning into the challenge ahead of Sunday Night Football.
The second-year Kansas City Chiefs defensive back said Friday he is ready for the task of facing Jaxon Smith-Njigba when the Chiefs meet the Seattle Seahawks. Smith-Njigba has been the NFL's most productive receiver through six weeks of the 2026 season, leading the league in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Williams did not talk around the matchup. He called Smith-Njigba one of the best in the league and said it will be a strong test for both the secondary and the defense as a whole. That makes sense given the way Seattle's passing game has been carried by Smith-Njigba so far this year.
A difficult assignment for Kansas City
The Chiefs have not faced a true WR1 in 2026, so this is a different kind of challenge for a secondary that has had a relatively manageable path to this point. Williams and the rest of Kansas City's defensive backs will now have to deal with a receiver who has been central to everything Seattle has done through the air.
That is why Williams' comments matter. This is not simply a routine week-of-game answer. It is the Chiefs' clearest test yet for a defense that has not had to match up with a receiver performing at this level all season.
Williams building momentum of his own
There is also a reason Kansas City is feeling better about sending Williams into this matchup. In last week's victory over the Chargers, he recorded three solo tackles, one tackle for loss and two passes defended. That came after defensive backs coach Dave Merritt said Thursday that Williams was trending toward becoming something.
Those two pieces fit together. Williams is getting more comfortable, and now he gets the biggest assignment of his young career. For the Chiefs, it is a chance to see how far he has come. For Williams, it is a chance to prove he can handle one of the league's most demanding receivers on one of the biggest stages of the week.
He made it clear he is ready.
