Charlie Atkinson has been called into England’s training squad to replace Fin Smith, after the Northampton Saints fly-half pulled out through injury. It is a straightforward change on paper, but one that matters because England are already deep into their preparations for the Nations Championship and the November Tests.
The RFU confirmed that Atkinson, who plays for Gloucester, has joined the England training squad while Fin Smith will continue his injury rehabilitation with England. For Steve Borthwick, it is an early adjustment to a camp built around a strong 36-man group and a short runway before the bigger fixtures arrive.
Fin Smith’s setback changes England’s fly-half picture
Smith’s withdrawal comes at an awkward moment for England. On Saturday, he played the full 80 minutes for Northampton Saints in their 26-7 defeat to Leicester Tigers, but he was also seen limping in the second half after a carry. That is enough to create concern in a squad where rhythm and continuity are so important in a test-week environment.
The issue for England is not simply replacing one fly-half with another. It is about maintaining the shape of a camp that has been put together with the next few weeks in mind, including matches against Australia, Japan and the All Blacks. A squad can only be truly settled if key players are fit and able to train properly.
Atkinson gets another chance on the international stage
Atkinson’s inclusion gives England another option at fly-half, and it comes after he won his maiden Test cap against the USA in July 2025. That experience will matter, even if this call-up comes via injury rather than through a straight selection call.
England are due to train at the England Performance Centre at Pennyhill Park until Tuesday 27 October, with the three-day camp designed to sharpen the group before the next stage of the Nations Championship build-up. A late change does not derail that work, but it does underline how quickly circumstances can shift at this level.
What it means for the Nations Championship build-up
England welcome Australia to Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Sunday 8 November in Round 4 of the Nations Championship, and that makes every day of preparation valuable. With Japan and the All Blacks also on the schedule, there is no shortage of quality opposition ahead.
For now, the focus is on getting the squad through camp with the fly-half balance adjusted and Fin Smith managed properly. England still have a strong group in place, but this is a reminder that even small injury setbacks can alter the shape of the build-up before the November Tests begin.
