The Strokes Newcastle debut ended around 10.30pm on Sunday night after only one encore song at Utilita Arena. The band went on at around 9pm, then left fans expecting more when the set stopped short of a full encore.
The show was the band’s first ever Newcastle performance, and the setlist included Lonely in the Future, Reptilia and Hard to Explain. For a first local date on the UK leg, the missing extra songs became the story as much as the set itself.
Utilita Arena and 11pm
Fans said the show ended without Threat of Joy, Selfless or Ode to the Mets, the songs many expected to hear after the main set. That left the night with a half hour gap to the venue’s 11pm curfew, which is what made the finish feel so abrupt to people in the room.
A Utilita Arena spokesperson said on Monday afternoon that the curfew for The Strokes was 11pm, and added that all show timings are approximate and may be subject to change. The timing detail matters because it cuts straight through the online claim that the arena had shifted the cutoff earlier.
Paris on Thursday, October 22
The Strokes had already played in Germany, Italy, Spain and France before reaching Newcastle, and they played the Accor Arena in Paris on Thursday, October 22. That wider run set the comparison point fans kept coming back to: European dates had already established a longer finish, while Newcastle got one encore song and a hard stop.
For the people who stayed expecting the usual extra stretch, the practical answer is simple enough: the show ended within the stated curfew, not beyond it. The sharper question now is why Newcastle got the shortest finish of the run, and that is the part the venue statement does not explain.
