Kent Pavelka announced Monday night that he will retire at the end of this Nebraska basketball season, closing the book on more than five decades as one of the most familiar voices in Huskers athletics.
The announcement came in an emotional pregame monologue, a fitting setting for a broadcaster whose connection to Nebraska basketball stretched across generations of fans, coaches and players. Pavelka’s retirement will not take effect immediately. He will remain on the call through the end of the season before stepping away.
A long run behind the microphone
Pavelka’s tenure spanned eras, from Danny Nee’s time as Nebraska’s head coach from 1986 to 2000 to the modern days at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. Over the years, he became a constant presence for listeners following the Huskers on the radio, whether it was a regular-season game or a memorable postseason moment.
He was on the call for Nebraska’s exhibition game against Wayne State at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, and he also discussed Nebraska basketball before a game against Indiana at the same arena on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. More recently, Pavelka and Danny Nee shared a laugh when Nee was honored during alumni weekend at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln on Jan. 20, 2024.
A voice tied to recent Huskers moments
Pavelka was also there for one of the program’s latest dramatic finishes, calling the Nebraska vs Iowa game during overtime at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Just days later, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, Pavelka and Jeff Smith finished their radio broadcast after the Huskers defeated Vanderbilt, 74-72, in Oklahoma City.
That sequence helped underscore what makes the retirement announcement significant: it is not just the end of a career, but the approaching end of a broadcast era for Nebraska basketball. For many fans, Pavelka’s voice has been part of the team’s identity for years.
Photos accompanying the announcement show Pavelka through the years, reinforcing the length and reach of his career. Now, with the season still in progress, Nebraska basketball listeners will get one final stretch with Pavelka on the call before his retirement becomes official at season’s end.
