Gustavo Varela's nine-goal run is reportedly drawing Arsenal attention

Gustavo Varela’s start at Monza has been hard to ignore. Since arriving from Benfica in July, the striker has scored nine goals in eight competitive matches, a burst of production that has already put him on Arsenal’s radar, according to reports.

The latest numbers came after Monza’s 4-0 win over Cagliari on Monday 19 October, when Varela scored twice and added an assist. By Saturday 24 October, Niccolò Ceccarini’s figures had him at seven goals and one assist in seven Serie A matches, underlining how quickly he has become one of the more productive forwards in the division.

Why Arsenal are watching

The reported interest comes with a clear caveat: Arsenal would only be in a position to move if Viktor Gyökeres were to leave elsewhere in January or next summer. Even so, the mention is notable because Varela’s output has come at Monza, who are said to be in the lower half of Serie A and not creating the same volume of chances a striker at a title contender might see.

That context helps explain why the conversation is growing. Monza reportedly paid €2.5m for Varela in July after his Benfica move, and the early return has been strong enough to make him a possible market opportunity if the situation around Gyökeres changes.

From loan spell to transfer buzz

Varela had already spent last season on loan at Gil Vicente, so this is not his first run of senior football in Portugal and Italy. But the step up in attention is arriving quickly, and the recent scoring streak suggests Monza may have landed a forward whose value could rise further if he keeps producing at this rate.

For Arsenal, the link is still conditional rather than immediate. For Varela, the simple takeaway is that a quick start in Serie A has turned a €2.5m summer move into a story worth monitoring well beyond Monza.
