Fabio Celestini, Burnley sack Nicky Hayen after 14 games

Fabio Celestini is not the issue Burnley have solved, but he sits in the frame as the club moves on from Nicky Hayen after just 14 games. The dismissal followed a 4-1 defeat at Lincoln City on Saturday, and Burnley moved within two hours to end a short and collapsing spell in charge.

Hayen’s last match turned after Burnley led 1-0, only to lose 4-1 at the ProAmpac Stadium. That was his sixth defeat of the campaign, and it left Burnley 22nd in the Championship with only one win from their past 24 league games.

Lincoln City and 14 games

Burnley appointed Hayen on 10 July to succeed Scott Parker, and the club has now pulled the plug before the season can drift any further. Hayen had won the Belgian title with Club Brugge in 2024, but his first job in English football unravelled fast in the Championship, where Burnley had already conceded 25 goals in their opening 12 games.

The sequence matters because Burnley had already been carrying a poor run before Saturday. Earlier in the month they beat Watford 4-0 for their first win of the season, then drew against Charlton and lost to Wolves after scoring first in both matches. That left the club searching for momentum it never managed to build.

Connor Roberts and 98%

Connor Roberts laid it out plainly before the dismissal was announced: “We know it's not good enough - we know the fans deserve a million times more, so we have to get on with it now and see if we can do better in the next game.” He also said the performances had not been good enough for 98% of the season, which matched the scale of the slide Burnley were trying to arrest.

Hayen’s own line after the defeat was equally stark: “I'm not going to lose my energy because this is something out of my hands”. Burnley still moved within two hours, and that timing points to a club that did not want the season’s early damage to harden into a longer crisis.

Diego Lopez and Burnley

Diego Lopez will play a key role in finding a successor once his arrival is confirmed, so Burnley’s next step is already tied to the club’s wider football structure. With the side 22nd in the Championship and one win from 24 league games, the decision now is less about explanation than recovery: Burnley need a head coach who can stop the slide immediately, not after another run of dropped points.
