Donnie Iris Dies at 83 After a Final Stage Run

Donnie Iris died at 83, and Joe Vitale Jr. shared the news in a Facebook post on Monday, Oct. 26. The death closes the career of a Pittsburgh rocker whose name became tied to Ah! Leah! and The Rapper.

Joe Vitale Jr. posts the notice

“Tonight, I have some very sad news to share. Many of you may already know about this, but today my boss and friend Donnie Iris passed away at the age of 83,” Vitale wrote. He added, “He always had an infectious smile, incredible energy and a wonderous personality.”

“He was King Cool,” he wrote, putting the farewell in the language that followed Iris through much of his run. For readers who knew him through the records, the number that mattered was 83; for the Pittsburgh scene, it was the loss of a performer who had kept a long connection to the city’s music identity.

No. 29 and No. 2

Ah! Leah! reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981, while The Rapper climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1970s with the Jaggerz. Those two songs gave Iris a chart profile that stretched across different phases of his career, from the Jaggerz to Donnie Iris & the Cruisers.

That span mattered because the hits were not isolated. He also performed on Wild Cherry's 1979 album Only the Wild Survive, then helped launch Donnie Iris & the Cruisers, whose 1980 debut on Midwest Records, Back on the Streets, carried Ah! Leah! into rotation.

Oct. 9 retirement

On Oct. 9, Iris wrote, “After much thought, and in light of recent health issues, I have made the difficult decision to retire from future concert performances.” He added, “Music has given me far more than I could ever put into words. From the earliest days to every chapter of my life, your support has been a constant source of joy and inspiration.”

He had announced that retirement after his final gig on Sept. 28 at Citizens Live at The Wylie in Pittsburg, following a 2023 diagnosis of bladder cancer shortly after his 80th birthday show. The sequence matters: the stage exit came first, then the death notice, leaving the cause of death unannounced at press time.

For fans of Donnie Iris and the Pittsburgh music scene, the practical takeaway is simple: the catalog now carries the work forward. Ah! Leah! and The Rapper remain the records that define the run, while the unanswered question is the one that will shape the immediate aftermath for listeners and family alike.
