Dean Lowry joins Giants practice squad as veteran depth becomes a priority

The New York Giants have added veteran defensive lineman Dean Lowry to their practice squad, a move that gives them another experienced option in the middle of the defensive front. At 32, Lowry brings more than a decade of NFL experience and a track record that could make him a useful game-day elevation if the Giants need reinforcements.

The addition comes at a time when the Giants have been working to rebuild their interior defensive line after trading Dexter Lawrence in the spring. They have also signed D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris to help fill the void, but the decision to bring in Lowry suggests the team still wants more depth and more flexibility up front.

Why Dean Lowry fits the Giants’ needs

Lowry entered the league as a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft by the Green Bay Packers and has since built a long resume across several teams. He has played in 132 career regular-season games with 85 starts, recording 271 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 18 passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble and five fumble recoveries.

His best pass-rushing season came in 2021, when he posted a career-high five sacks. That production may not define his value now, but it does underline the fact that he can still offer something beyond pure stop-gap depth.

For the Giants, the attraction is obvious. Lowry is a seasoned interior presence who can help if injuries, matchup concerns or late-week workload issues force the team to adjust. In a league where defensive line depth can disappear quickly, that matters.

A familiar face after earlier talks

There is also a small layer of familiarity to the move. In early September, the Giants and Lowry discussed a similar arrangement that did not move beyond preliminary talks. This time, the two sides have completed the deal, and Lowry is now in position to provide help if needed.

That is especially relevant after a difficult stretch for the veteran lineman. During training camp in 2025, Lowry suffered an ACL tear, and he spent the entire 2025 season on injured reserve recovering from that injury. The practice squad signing gives him a route back into the team environment and gives the Giants another option if they need to call on him later in the season.

At 6-foot-6 and 296 pounds, Lowry still fits the profile of the kind of interior body the Giants want available. The next question is whether he stays on the practice squad or earns a game-day role if the roster demands it.
