Senator Ashley Moody secures $11 million for Port of Fernandina

Senator Ashley Moody helped secure $11 million in federal grant funding for the Port of Fernandina after pressing the Department of Transportation and the Maritime Administration for support. The money is tied to flood mitigation and dock rehabilitation at a port facing chronic flooding and structural deterioration.

Moody said, "Florida's ports are critical to our economy, supporting thousands of jobs and helping businesses move goods across the country and around the world. The Port of Fernandina is an important economic engine for Northeast Florida, and this $11 million investment will help protect its infrastructure, strengthen supply chain reliability and ensure the port can continue serving our region for years to come."

June letter to Stephen Carmel

In June, Moody laid out the funding concerns in a letter to Maritime Administration Administrator Capt. Stephen Carmel. She later called the Department of Transportation urging support for the Ocean Highway & Port Authority, which backs the Port of Fernandina project.

The grant is meant to support drainage system improvements, water capture infrastructure, pumps for surge and rainfall events, crane rail repair, deck patching, beam reinforcement, pile repairs and cathodic protection, along with other structural upgrades. Those are the kinds of fixes that keep cargo handling moving when flooding and deterioration begin to interfere with day-to-day operations.

Aaron Bean on Northeast Florida

Aaron Bean called the Port of Fernandina a "small but mighty, strategically vital, and irreplaceable asset within Northeast Florida's economic and transportation network." He said the federal investment will enable the port to enhance and repair dock infrastructure, address drainage and recurring flood vulnerabilities, and improve operational reliability, worker safety and long-term viability.

The port's problems are not limited to one piece of equipment or one stretch of dock. The grant is aimed at overlapping failures in infrastructure, handling capacity and safety standards, so the work can address the same bottlenecks from several directions at once.

For the Ocean Highway & Port Authority, the immediate practical change is access to funding for repairs that have been identified and packaged as a single federal project. For port users and workers, the next stage is the engineering and construction side of the process, where the listed upgrades would be applied to keep the Port of Fernandina operating with fewer flood-related interruptions.
