Blackpool came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2 in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, and the result moved them up to second in Northern Group B. Aston Villa, by contrast, remain bottom of the section without a point.
It was a lively night at Bloomfield Road, with five goals coming in the first 34 minutes and the match finished with Blackpool showing the sharper edge when it mattered. Zac Ashworth scored Blackpool's equaliser, helping turn a game that had already seen Fletcher Boyd put Villa ahead in the 29th minute.
A fast start and a decisive response
The early stages set the tone for a competitive fixture. Villa struck first through Boyd, but Blackpool responded in the same period and kept pressing until they completed the comeback. The home side's energy and willingness to attack the game were central to the win, which underlined how quickly a group-stage match can change when both sides commit to going forward.
After the match, Jon Brady said the approach was always to play with intent and win the contest, adding that his side attacked the game with a strong team and was pleased to see five goals scored. That felt apt on a night when the scoreline moved quickly and neither side was able to settle into a controlled rhythm for long.
What the result means for the group
For Blackpool, the three points are important because they keep them in touching distance at the top end of Northern Group B. For Aston Villa, the concern is more immediate: they are still searching for their first point and now have little margin for error in the remaining games.
Gavin Cowan described the result as a great night for everyone involved and said the players thoroughly deserved it, calling it a strong reflection of the quality at the club. That is the other side of a night like this: the result matters, but so does the way a team responds when the game turns against them.
Tuesday's other EFL Trophy results added to the wider picture, with Port Vale beating Manchester City to go top of Northern Group D on seven points, Arsenal defeating AFC Wimbledon 2-1 to lead Southern Group F with six points, and Shrewsbury Town beating Everton 2-1, leaving Everton still without a point in Northern Group E.
But at Bloomfield Road, the headline was Blackpool's comeback. They were tested early, they found a response, and they leave the night in a strong position with the group stage still alive.
