Jennifer Lawrence returns for The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping

Jennifer Lawrence said she is returning to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and she framed the decision as an emotional reunion with the people who built the original franchise with her. On Call Her Daddy, she said going back to Katniss felt “Unbelievable.”

She said it was “so crazy” because “it was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD who I’ve worked with a million times too cause I love him and Josh and Woody and it was so emotional.” Lawrence also said she and Josh Hutcherson “didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other.”

Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson

Lawrence’s comments do more than add nostalgia to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. They pull another original-film name back into a prequel built around Haymitch Abernathy, which keeps the new film tied to the earlier Hunger Games run instead of treating it as a clean break.

She also gave a sharper sense of how this reunion played in practice. “And Woody obviously came through the window of my hotel room uninvited cause it would not be the same,” she said. For a franchise that has always traded on continuity, that kind of overlap is part of the business case as much as the sentiment.

Last year’s reports

Last year, media reports said Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson would return, but the latest comments are the first time the return has been laid out directly in public. That matters because chatter can keep a title in the conversation, while an on-record statement turns rumor into a usable marketing beat.

The film is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel and follows sixteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy from District 12 on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Annual Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Francis Lawrence directs, with Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie on the screenplay, and the cast also includes Mckenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Ben Wang.

November 20 release

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens in theaters on November 20, so this return lands with a date already fixed on the calendar. That gives the studio a clean runway to keep linking the prequel to the earlier films, while leaving one practical question hanging in the air: whether Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson will appear on screen in the same way Lawrence just did.
