Cadillac has moved quickly to secure Sergio Perez for the long term, agreeing a multi-year contract extension ahead of his home race in Mexico. The timing gives the team stability at a key moment in its debut Formula 1 season and keeps one of the sport's most experienced drivers at the center of its project.
The extension comes after a difficult 2024 split with Red Bull and a year on the sidelines for Perez, who returned to Formula 1 this season with Cadillac. The 36-year-old entered the team with an initial multi-year deal that already included options over the future from 2027 onwards, and this latest agreement strengthens that partnership further.
Perez's career record helps explain why Cadillac acted now. He has six wins and 39 podiums in Formula 1, a résumé that gives the team a proven reference point as it continues building in a championship where it is still operating toward the back of the pack. Cadillac's belief in Perez's ability, and Perez's belief in the project, appear to have lined up at the right time.
What the extension means
The deal also arrives just before a landmark moment in Perez's career. At his home race in Mexico, he will make his 300th Formula 1 start, a notable achievement for a driver who has been around the sport long enough to race for Sauber, McLaren, Force India/Racing Point and Red Bull before joining Cadillac.
For Cadillac, the decision to extend Perez underlines a clear priority: give the new team a dependable, accomplished driver while the broader Formula 1 operation continues to take shape. With Marcin Budkowski named Cadillac Formula 1 Team Principal, the organization is putting structure around a debut campaign that still has plenty of development work ahead.
In that sense, this is more than just a contract announcement. It is a sign that Cadillac wants continuity, experience and a driver it already views as one of the best in F1 right now.
