Duke have added another major piece to their 2027 recruiting class, with Asa Montgomery committing to the Blue Devils after his official visit to Durham. The 6'7" forward is one of the bigger risers in the class and gives Jon Scheyer another highly ranked wing prospect to build around.

Montgomery is ranked No. 8 overall in the 2027 class and No. 3 among small forwards, a profile that helps explain why Duke moved quickly once the visit was complete. He had planned trips to Louisville and Arizona, but those visits were cancelled after his time with Duke for Countdown to Craziness.

Montgomery fits the modern Duke wing mould

The attraction is obvious. Montgomery has the size, skill and production to project as a high-level wing at the next level, and his numbers show a player already influencing games in a range of ways. Across seven appearances, he averaged 9.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals in 17.0 minutes.

That blend of production and versatility is exactly why Duke have been so eager to keep stacking talent on the perimeter. Before Montgomery’s commitment, Kager Knueppel and Luke Paul had already joined the 2027 class, giving the Blue Devils a strong early base before this latest addition.

Why Duke moved now

Montgomery’s rise over the last few months has made him one of the more important names in the 2027 cycle, and Duke’s pitch appears to have landed at the right time. He also brings the benefit of national-team experience, having played for Team USA at the FIBA U17 World Cup this summer alongside Duke freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje.

That experience mattered too. Montgomery was part of a gold-medal run at the FIBA U17 World Cup, giving him a background in high-level competition that fits the expectation level at Duke.

For the Blue Devils, the headline is simple: they have their third commitment in the 2027 class, and it is another elite wing. For Montgomery, the move gives him a clear next step after a rapid rise, and Duke now have another top-end piece for the 2027-28 picture and beyond.
