Massimiliano Allegri says Napoli must climb the table one game at a time ahead of Monza Vs Napoli

The problem for SSC Napoli is not that there is no time left. The problem is that time is already becoming a test of nerve. Massimiliano Allegri made that clear on Tuesday ahead of Monza vs Napoli, insisting the team must do the hard, unfashionable work of improving their performances and their league position one game at a time.

That is the reality of this moment. Napoli are not in a position to dream big when they are still trying to steady themselves, manage unavailable players and get the squad back together. Allegri did not try to dress it up as anything else. He admitted there is not much to say right now beyond the basic truth: work harder, defend the process, and stop waiting for the perfect version of the team to magically appear.

Napoli need more than excuses

Allegri was blunt about what has been missing. Napoli, he said, need to do better with their distribution and their ball management, after a game against Roma in which they did not always make the right decisions and overdid things instead of simply keeping the ball. That is not the kind of detail a coach offers when he thinks everything is fine. It is the language of a side that knows its margins are too thin to keep wasting possession and momentum.

He also pointed to the wider competitive picture, saying Monza will pose a tactical challenge because of their man-for-man style, similar to Roma's setup. In other words, this is not a fixture where Napoli can expect to coast through on reputation alone. It will have to be read properly, managed properly and played properly.

There is at least some movement in the right direction. Allegri said Napoli are getting back some of the players they had missed, although Benoit Badiashile has now been sidelined. Antonio Vergara will be with the squad tomorrow, and the coach was clearly encouraged by what the young player can offer. He described Vergara as a player with tremendous potential, capable of scoring from wide areas but also of drifting into different roles and running at goal.

That matters because Napoli need options, not just slogans. Allegri said he wants everyone back so the squad can be used to full effect, and that is the most revealing line of all. This is not a team with luxury to spare. It is a team that has to stay afloat while waiting for absentees to return, and the league table will not wait with it.

Allegri also accepted the personal cost of the week, saying he had decided not to appeal and was more disappointed about Napoli not taking three points in a game they deserved to win than about the ban itself. He said he was sorry not to sit in the dugout against Monza and Juventus, but trusted his backroom team to guide the players.

That leaves the task exactly where it belongs: on the pitch. Napoli need belief, but as Allegri admitted, belief is usually boosted by results, not the other way around. For now, they are lagging behind in the standings and must climb back up the hard way. One game at a time. No shortcuts. No noise. Just Monza Vs Napoli and the uncomfortable truth that the table only changes when performances do.
