The Orlando Magic got a small but important piece of good news before facing the Toronto Raptors: Anthony Black was upgraded to available after missing shootaround earlier in the day for personal reasons. In a season already shaped by injuries, that update matters because Orlando’s guard rotation was already under pressure.
The timing is especially relevant for a team that has had to adjust quickly. Paolo Banchero sustained a low-grade right high ankle sprain late in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, and Jalen Suggs suffered a mild bone bruise in his right knee late in the fourth quarter against the New York Knicks on Sunday night. With both players out, Black’s availability gives the Magic another ball-handler at a moment when they need one.
That does not mean Black has suddenly become the centerpiece of the offense, but it does mean Orlando can better manage the minutes and responsibilities in the backcourt. He is expected to handle a large portion of the point-guard duties with Jalen Suggs out, and that makes his status more than just a routine injury-report update. For a team trying to stay organized early in the season, it is a meaningful development.
Why Black’s status matters
Black’s available tag is significant because the Magic have already had to deal with multiple injuries at the start of the season. Against a Raptors team opening the first of two home games that week against Orlando, the Magic need whatever continuity they can get. Even one additional available guard can change how the offense is initiated, how the minutes are staggered and how much pressure falls on the remaining healthy starters and reserves.
Black also brings a recent reminder of what he can provide. In two contests, he has averaged 18 points on 6 for 11 shooting, along with 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 25 minutes. That kind of production does not solve every problem, but it does show why his presence is useful when the rotation is thin.
For Orlando, the bigger picture is straightforward: the injuries to Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs have already altered the early-season script, and Black’s availability offers at least a temporary stabilizer. It is not the kind of update that changes a season on its own, but in the short term, it changes the shape of this game.
