Kiah Stokes powers Valkyries to 3-2 WNBA Finals lead — Valkyries Game Today

The Valkyries game today had the feel of a turning point, and Golden State made sure it became one. Kiah Stokes led the way with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks as the Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 64-55 in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals on Monday night to move one win away from a championship.

It was a significant result for a team in its second season. The series now shifts back to Atlanta for Game 6 on Thursday, with the Valkyries one victory away from closing out the title. If Atlanta forces another game, Game 7 would be played at Chase Center on Saturday.

Stokes sets the tone in a hard-fought win

Stokes has been central to Golden State's postseason run, and this was another night when her value showed up in different ways. She was not only active on the glass and around the rim, she also hit key 3-pointers that helped the Valkyries control the game.

Veronica Burton summed up her impact simply: “We’re not here without Kiah.” She added that Stokes brings “veteran experience” and that “it’s more than just defense.” That is exactly the kind of influence championship teams need when the pressure rises and every possession matters.

For Golden State, this has been a series built on collective belief as much as individual performance. Natalie Nakase has leaned on a “strength in numbers” approach all season long, and the move she made on Saturday showed that flexibility can still matter in the biggest moments. By inserting Tiffany Hayes and Kaila Charles into the starting lineup, she changed the shape of the team and Golden State responded with a 67-62 win in Game 4 before following it up in Game 5.

One more win, but the job is not done

The margin was tight enough to keep Atlanta in the conversation. The Dream can still extend the series by winning Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7. Karl Smesko kept the message simple after the game: “Nothing’s changed, we win two games we’re champions.”

That is the reality for Golden State now. The Valkyries have given themselves the chance to finish the series, but they will have to do it away from home first. Atlanta has already shown enough resilience to stay alive, and the pressure of the next game will be enormous.

For Stokes, the night carried an added emotional weight. After hearing an arena full of 18,000 fans, she said: “It feels pretty special.” She also added: “I always know what I brought to a team, I always understood my value but just to hear an arena full of 18,000 fans it just really makes me feel appreciated and loved.”

That is where Golden State stands now: one win from a championship, one road game away from history. On Thursday, the Valkyries will try to finish the job in Game 6. If they cannot, everything goes back to Chase Center on Saturday.
