Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a never-before-seen Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis family photo for Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, showing their three children alongside mountain rescue volunteers. The image was posted after a summer meeting with local teams, and it tied the family’s public message to a thank-you for the people who work in difficult terrain.
The children were 13, 11 and 8 in the photo. Prince George wore jeans and a gray polo, Princess Charlotte wore a sweater with navy blue and jeans, and Prince Louis wore a similar-colored polo with navy blue and jeans, while William wore a brown pullover sweater and Kate wore a baseball cap and brown puffer jacket.
William and Kate’s message
The Prince and Princess of Wales wrote: “We send our heartfelt thanks to all those who volunteer their time and expertise to keep people safe in some of our most beautiful but challenging landscapes,” and added that they had seen “first-hand the dedication, professionalism and compassion that define their work.” They also said they are “incredibly proud to support the extraordinary volunteers who respond in all conditions, often at a moment's notice, to help others when they need it most.”
That wording makes the photo more than a family picture. It places the children inside a public message of support for mountain rescue volunteers, with the image serving as the visible part of a thank-you that also included several team members in the frame.
Kate Middleton in June
The summer timing connects the post to Kate Middleton’s June challenge. She completed the UK’s Three National Peaks challenge with James Middleton, trekking across the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales.
In June, she said the challenge was “partly personal” and added, “I'm so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills. But more importantly it's to give something back.” She also said the effort was meant to raise awareness for the deeper impact of serious illness and the importance of holistic healthcare.
Summer meeting with teams
The family photo appears to have been taken over the summer when the Waleses met local mountain rescue teams. William and Kate said the meeting was to say thank you in person for the role those teams play in keeping walkers and climbers safe on the mountains all year round.
That detail matters because the image was not shot during a formal public appearance. It came from a private thank-you meeting, then reappeared later as a public post for Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, giving the photo a second life and a clearer purpose.
The post leaves one practical point open: it does not say exactly when the summer photo was taken or where the meeting took place. What it does settle is the purpose of the release — a family image used to publicly recognize mountain rescue volunteers and to connect that recognition with Kate Middleton’s June challenge and recovery after her cancer battle in 2024.
