Police said the shooting happened near Fulton Avenue and East 171st Street. Investigators were searching for three teens who fled the area wearing black sweatsuits and blue surgical masks.
Thomas Frimpong said he rushed to the hospital after getting the call and was told there that his son died from his injuries. He said, "My son was precious very clever," and said his son had moved to New York from Ghana about a year ago.

Thomas Frimpong said the principal told him three days earlier that two kids were bullying his son and were suspended for a week. He said he believed the shooting was tied to bullying, while police had not said they had settled on a motive.
He also said his son generally kept to himself. A resident in the neighborhood urged parents to watch their children closely, saying, "Check your children, make sure that they not walking around with guns, listen to your children, get them some help," as the search for the three teens continued.
