Isaiah McDuffie took on a bigger communication role on Sunday, wearing the green dot in Zaire Franklin's stead after Franklin was unavailable. That detail mattered because the green dot is the clearest sign of who is handling the linebacker-to-coach communication duties on game day.
Franklin's absence traces back to Thursday's practice, when he was accidentally kicked and later diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his leg. He missed the game last week, and by Tuesday Matt LaFleur had already announced that Franklin would not play against the Panthers on Thursday night.
What changed on Sunday
Ty’Ron Hopper took Franklin's spot in the lineup, while McDuffie handled the communication responsibilities that usually come with the green dot. It was a practical shift rather than a long-term change, but it was still a notable one for a defense adjusting on the fly.
The Packers did not place Franklin on injured reserve because they expected him to return after missing fewer than four games. That helps explain why this situation has been handled week to week instead of turning into a more permanent roster move.
For McDuffie, the assignment shows the trust the Packers put in him when the defense needs stability. For Franklin, the focus now is simply getting healthy enough to return without the injury turning into something more complicated.
