Ashley Walters says the last season of Top Boy was difficult, but it brought him and Kane Robinson closer while the final episode was still being reshaped. That mattered because the show ended with Sully dead in his car, yet the released version refused to show who pulled the trigger.
William Stefan Smith’s final take
William Stefan Smith directed the final episode and said the first version of the ending revealed the killer. He said, “So the first way we shot the ending, where we revealed the killer, that's what was on the page, we revealed the killer.”
Then he pushed for another pass. “Then we had one more take, and I was like let's do one where we don't see the killer,” he said, adding that the version without the killer was the one everyone preferred.
Why the killer stayed hidden
Smith’s explanation was blunt: “The idea of not showing the killer for me the reason was it could be anyone because Sully is a person that just has so much enemies.” He also said, “The idea that one of these enemies came and shot him, for me demonstrates what life can be like on the roads, so that's why we did that.”
That choice changed the ending from a direct answer to a broader one. The scene still ends with Sully shot dead in his car after a tense standoff, but the final cut keeps the mystery intact instead of naming a killer on screen.
Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson
Walters said in 2023 that filming the last season took a toll. “Filming the last season bought me and Kane probably even closer than we've ever been doing that show because we didn't have the greatest time. Fighting for what we believed in and making it the best show that we could make it be, the best last season for the fans,” he said.
He added, “People don't understand, like we go hard for that show, we go hard to make sure that the scripts are right, we go hard to make sure other characters are being represented in the way they should be and storylines make sense.” He followed that with, “It was tough, we went through a tough experience that we haven't been through before and that brought us closer together.”
Sully’s killer stays off screen
Smith said Walters and Robinson saw the version without the killer shown, and that everyone agreed it was stronger. He also drew a line under the debate: “I can understand that some people want to know who killed Sully, but I won't be the one to tell you.”
For viewers, that means the released Top Boy finale is designed to leave the identity of Sully’s attacker unresolved. The original ending answered the question; the version that aired chose not to, and that is now the only ending that counts.
