Freddie Slater is about to take a small but significant step in his climb through the single-seater ladder. The 18-year-old Briton will drive for Audi in first practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 30 October, then return a week later for another outing at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Those appearances matter because they will give Slater his first grand prix-weekend Formula 1 experience before he moves up to Formula 2 next season. Audi's entry into Formula 1 this season also makes the moment notable in a wider sense: Slater became the first driver to be brought into the team's driver development programme.

He has already shown why the programme moved early. This season, Slater finished second on his debut in the Formula 3 championship, a strong enough start to suggest his rise is happening on schedule. The two practice runs in Mexico and Brazil now give him a chance to add mileage in one of the most demanding environments in the sport.

What Audi sees in him

Allan McNish said the team has seen Slater make great progress in recent years, both on and off the track, and described this as the right time for him to step up. He added that the appearances in Mexico and Brazil will give Slater valuable experience of a Formula 1 race weekend, along with another chance to continue his development before he steps up to Formula 2 next season.

Slater echoed that sense of occasion, calling the chance to get behind the wheel of an F1 car at a grand prix weekend a big moment and something he has dreamed about since he was a kid. He also said he has learned a lot this year and that the free practice outings will be another opportunity to keep gaining on-track experience.

For Slater, the bigger picture is clear. These are not just ceremonial laps; they are part of a controlled progression, with Formula 1 exposure now feeding into the next phase of his career. If the aim is to prepare him for Formula 2 and beyond, Audi could hardly have picked a more useful pair of weekends.
