Sheffield United and Wrexham meet in the Championship at Bramall Lane on Friday night, with only two points separating the sides before kick-off at 20:00 GMT.
It is a fixture that has quickly taken on real significance, even if it is still a recent rivalry rather than one built over decades. Chris Wilder summed it up simply by calling it “a tasty game,” while also noting that it is “not historical over 15, 20 to 25 years, it’s a recent one, but it’s gathered pace along the way.”
How the rivalry built quickly
The clubs had not met in league competition since the 1982-83 campaign before last season’s meetings added a new edge. In 2023, Sheffield United beat Wrexham 3-3 on aggregate after a fourth round FA Cup replay, following a 3-3 draw in the first match and a 3-1 replay win.
That tie mattered for more than the result. Wrexham went on to secure the first of three successive promotions under Phil Parkinson after that FA Cup meeting, and the two clubs then produced two more memorable games last season.
At the Racecourse Ground in December, Wrexham came from 3-1 down to win 5-3. Then, in South Yorkshire in March, they beat Sheffield United 2-1.
What the managers said
Parkinson said he had been talking about the fixture at a function the night before and pointed to the FA Cup meeting as a game that typified Wrexham. He said they lost two players through injury in the first 10 minutes, were 1-0 down, and still showed “incredible” determination to stay in the game.
He also said there was “a big gulf between the two clubs at the time,” with Sheffield United then a top-end Championship side and one of the best teams. Even so, Parkinson said the performance captured the “spirit, belief and the hunger” he wants from his team.
Looking back at last season, Parkinson said he watched both games again this week and described the 5-3 win as probably one of the best Championship games of the season for any team.
For Sheffield United, the focus is now on the present rather than the recent past. Wilder said summer squad changes mean he is not dwelling on last season’s two defeats, but Friday’s meeting still carries extra weight because of how fast this rivalry has developed.
