The first round of the IHSAA football sectional openers offered plenty of postseason chances, but not every underdog took advantage. Across Classes 1A through 4A on Friday night, 111 losing-record teams combined to go 30-81, and no 0-9 team survived the night.
That made for a clear opening statement in the Ihsaa Football Sectional 2026 bracket. The tournament format gave every team a postseason shot, but the opening results showed how difficult it is to keep a season alive once sectional play begins.
How the opening round played out
There were some notable upsets mixed in with the expected wins by higher-performing teams. Among the results reported Friday night, teams such as Cardinal Ritter, Covenant Christian, West Lafayette, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian and North Knox were among the winners, while other results reflected how wide the gap can be in sectional play even when records are close.
The biggest scorelines from the night highlighted that range. Lafayette Central Catholic won 62-0, Evansville Harrison won 80-0, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian won 84-0, and North Knox won 76-0. Other decisive victories included Winchester at 49-21, Seeger at 48-14, South Vermillion at 47-7 and North Posey at 77-6.
There were also tighter games that showed just how competitive some sectional openers were. Examples included Brown County's 35-28 win, Knightstown's 20-14 result, Union City's 34-28 victory, Benton Central's 40-21 win and Western's 49-14 result. In one of the more unusual developments, a 1A game between Cambridge City Lincoln and Indianapolis Tindley had no reported final at last check.
What advances to Oct. 30
The teams that advanced, along with teams that drew byes, move on to the Oct. 30 sectional semifinals. That next round now becomes the key checkpoint for the surviving teams, while Classes 5A and 6A are still waiting to begin their sectionals later.
If Friday night was about survival, the next round will be about whether the early-round winners can keep momentum alive. For the teams that came through, the reward is another postseason week. For the teams that did not, the season is over with the opening whistle of sectional play now in the books.
