This was not supposed to feel this awkward for Australia. Yet in the final match in Pool A at Townsville, the Kangaroos were immediately dragged into a live test of nerve after Cook Islands found a way to strike first and turn the opening stages of Australia vs Cook Islands into something far more uncomfortable than the script suggested.
Australia began on the front foot. Reece Walsh kicked off the contest, Brown spilled a high bomb in the corner inside two minutes, and by six minutes Walsh had already finished off a strong restart set with a try in the left corner. At that point, the tempo looked familiar enough: Australia moving the ball, Cook Islands chasing the game, and the favourites appearing to settle.
But the early rhythm did not last. Martin spilled a pass after Dearden had created a gap, Harry Grant was penalised for getting in the way of a Cook Islands kick chaser, and Walsh’s restart then sailed over the dead ball line. Those are the kinds of small errors that give underdogs oxygen, and Cook Islands were not interested in wasting the invitation.
Cook Islands Take Their Moment
By the time the match reached the 17-minute mark, Cook Islands had already been handed a set restart for offside, and Takairangi overhit a kick that Best marked in-goal. Then came the moment that mattered most: Ruatapu Ngatikaura scored to put Cook Islands ahead, with Holmes adding the conversion.
That is a significant swing in a pool-stage contest that was supposed to be about Australia imposing order. Instead, the early story was about Cook Islands showing enough composure to punish hesitation and enough belief to make the Kangaroos feel the pressure. Australia may still have all the talent, but the opening passage has already shown that talent alone will not smooth over loose handling, sloppy field position and a few too many moments of complacency.
In a tournament setting, that is the warning sign. One early try does not decide a match, but it does change the mood, and Cook Islands have made sure Australia now have to earn every inch of this one.
