Michael Carrick has made it clear that Bruno Fernandes will remain Manchester United captain before Saturday's trip to Chelsea, with the head coach insisting there are “absolutely no issues” over the midfielder's position or commitment.

It is a significant call at a difficult moment for Manchester United. The club are on an eight-game winless run, their worst stretch of results since the 2015-16 season, and Carrick's own future had come under scrutiny after Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth.

Fernandes, who joined Manchester United in January 2020, had also questioned the tactics used in the 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. But Carrick has now backed him to continue leading the team as United try to steady themselves before they travel to Chelsea on Saturday.

Carrick: Fernandes is fully committed

Carrick said the issue was straightforward after clear-the-air talks between the pair at Carrington training ground on Tuesday.

“He is an important player for this group. He has been and he will be,” Carrick said. “He's fully committed to this football club; he's fully committed to making things better. There are absolutely no issues with that.”

That is the key point for United. In a spell where every decision is being examined, Carrick has chosen continuity in the captaincy and tried to remove any sense of a deeper problem between manager and player.

Why the captaincy decision matters

Carrick also stressed that Fernandes remains central to the side's leadership group.

“He's the one that's led the team so well for many a game and many a year, and he'll continue to do that. There are absolutely no issues with that,” he said.

The decision to leave Fernandes on the bench for the Bournemouth match was presented as a one-off selection call rather than a lasting shift in status. Carrick added: “It doesn't change for me. It was a decision for what we felt for the game. That's it.”

For United, the message is simple: the captaincy is not the issue. The bigger concern is stopping the slide before a trip to Chelsea that already feels like a major test of the team's resilience and the manager's authority.

United need a response at Chelsea

United have not gone nine matches without a win since the 1988-89 campaign, and that is the type of statistic that will sit heavily over the club until they turn results around.

Carrick said the group knows what is required. “We are clear with the situation of the team, and as a football club,” he said. “We've got to make a difference and we've got to push things in a good direction.”

That is now the challenge for Manchester United and Fernandes alike. The captain keeps the armband, but the pressure remains on everyone at the club to produce a result at Chelsea and begin to change the mood.
