Rafael Espinoza has a new opponent for his featherweight title defense on October 31 in Riyadh. The WBO approved No. 15 contender Ricardo Blandon to step in after the local commission refused to authorize Lorenzo Parra’s participation one week before the fight.
The late change gives Espinoza a different target in the final days of camp, which is never ideal for a championship defense. He had been preparing for Parra, so the switch means his team has to adjust strategy quickly with only a short window left before fight night.
Why the change matters
Opponent changes this close to a bout can affect everything from game planning to sparring work. Blandon enters on short notice, while Espinoza now has to make sure his preparation matches the new assignment rather than the fighter he originally expected to meet.
The WBO said Blandon still must satisfy medical and regulatory requirements before the bout moves forward. That leaves the situation settled for now, but the final steps still have to be completed before Espinoza’s title defense in Riyadh can proceed as planned.
